Fixing spring roller shades, adjusting spring tension.
Roller shades are constructed with a coiled spring inside of the hollow roller tube. When the roller shade is pulled down, the tension on the spring increases. The tension is maintained by a ratchet and pin when you stop pulling the shade down. On the other side of the roller tube, a free-turning pin is mounted into the bracket.
During shipment, the spring will occasionally uncoil, so your blinds won’t work properly. This problem can be easily fixed by following the instructions below.
Tighten the spring tension in the shade:
- Pull the shade down halfway.
- Remove the shade from its brackets.
- Evenly roll up the shade by hand.
- Place it back in the brackets.
- Steps 1-4 can be repeated until there is good tension.
Loosen the spring tension in the shade:
- Roll the shade up.
- Remove the shade from its brackets.
- Unroll the shade halfway by hand.
- Place it back in the brackets.
- Steps 1-4 can be repeated until there is good tension.
Adjust a fully uncoiled spring:
- Remove the shade from its brackets.
- Unroll the shade halfway by hand.
- On the spring side of the shade, use pliers to turn the pin until you feel tension. Then, back off so the pawl (the latch that allows movement in only direction) can hook the ratchet.
- Loosen or tighten the spring tension as needed.
Release a spring that is locked in the coil:
- Remove the shade from its brackets.
- Grip the pin with pliers and twist clockwise to free the pawl. Quickly release it to unwind the coil.
- Loosen or tighten the spring tension as needed.
